Of course not. But, the average house has many small leaks, which altogether, can be equivalent to a large hole in your wall. Think about all the heat that would escape through a football-sized hole.
Concord Light will loan you an easy-to-use, hand-held leak detector to identify leaks and cracks that lead to heat loss and are a source of hidden drafts. These include smallgaps where a wall and floor meet, or around recessed lights, fireplaces, electrical outlets, windows and doors. The detector can also be used to identify cold spots where insulation is missing or inadequate.
The detector allows you to shine a point of light on a potential problem area, and compares the temperature of the area to your home’ s interior temperature. When a cold spot is encountered, the light changes color, making the leak or the weak insulation easy to identify.
Arrange to borrow a leak detector by contacting Jan Aceti, Energy Conservation Coordinator, at jaceti@concordma.gov or 978-318-3151.
